• Over half of a million men are
killed in the war
• The Union wins the Civil war
– Leads to slavery being
abolished and
reconstruction in the
south

– Most commonly
used rifle in the
Civil War
– Could hit a target
from 500 yards
away

• Enfield Rifle Musket
– It was the second
most used rifle in the
Civil War
– It was a standard
weapon of the British
– Americans did like the
Enfield, but soldiers
preferred the
Springfield because it
offered
interchangeable parts

rifle, Brunswick rifle,

Pistols and Revolvers
• There were thousands of different styles
used in the Civil War
– The most commonly used one was the Colt
Revolver
• Primarily the .44 caliber model 1860 and the .36
caliber Model 1851 Navy
• These two guns were very light weight less than 3
pounds
Edged Weapons
• These were weapons such as
bayonets, swords, knives, sabers,
pikes, lances
–Were often used more to
decorate their owners
–Very few men were injured in
the Civil War by these weapons

Injuries from Weapons
• There not much medicine in the Civil War
– If you were hit in the chest or head with one of
these weapons, you were most likely left to
die.
– If you were hit in the leg or arm with one of
these weapons, your leg or arm would most
likely be amputated.
• Also there was no anesthesia or pain medicine.
