Spinal cord injuries:
 Paraplegia: paralysis of
both lower limbs
 Quadriplegia: paralysis of
all 4 limbs

Gray matter
In the back;
Out the front
Posterior (dorsal) horns: sensory neurons
Anterior (ventral) horns: somatic motor neurons
WHITE MATTER
Carries messages
up and down,
to/from the brain
 Spinal nerves: come in pairs (roots) off of spinal
cord
Connected to spinal cord by:
Posterior (dorsal) root – sensory (into) neurons
Anterior (ventral) root – motor (exit) neurons
In the back;
Out the front
