List the 4 causes of
The Great War
• NATIONALISM
• ALLIANCES
• MILITARISM
• IMPERIALISM
The Start of the Great War
Remember:
These four causes
were building
up for years
In fact, when Colonel House was sent
as President Wilson’s advisor to
Europe, he said….
“Europe is like a POWDERKEG, it
only requires a SPARK to set the
whole thing off !!”
1. In June 1914, Archduke Francis
Ferdinand, heir to 2.the throne of
Austria-Hungary and his wife were
3.assassinated by a Serbian Nationalist
(someone who strongly supports the
country of Serbia)
4. The assassination of the Archduke
was the “spark” that started
the Great War
5. Austria-Hungary declared war on
Serbia and the countries of 6.Europe
took sides based on their alliances.

The War in Europe
1. The Allies blockaded the Central
Powers. Germany responded by
using submarines (U-Boats) to
blockade the Allies.
2. Germany would sink any ship
without warning. This was called
unrestricted submarine warfare.

3. Germany swept through Belgium
and invaded France. They 4.were
stopped 20 miles from Paris at the
Marne River (Western Front)
5. Then, Germany attacked Russia,
casing heavy loss of life and property
(Eastern Front)
6. Both Allied and Central troops dug
trenches to secure territory. 7.No land
was gained for months. The war was a
STALEMATE !!

Why did the United States become
involved in the Great War?
1. Unrestricted submarine warfare
by the Germany navy causes the
loss of American life and property
2. Germany tried to form an
alliance with Mexico. (The
Zimmerman Telegram)
3. Peace talks failed. The U.S.would
join the Allied forces in their fight.

Events of the Great War
1. The American Expeditionary Force
(AEF), led by General John J.
Pershing, arrives in France in June
1917.
2. In 1917, a Communist revolution in
Russia causes them to withdraw
from the war.

3. As a result, Germany moves its
troops from the eastern to the
western front.
4. However, the Allies are able to
push the German army back to
the Belgium border.
5. As Germany begins to lose the
war, Kaiser Wilhelm I flees and
Germany’s new leaders ask for an
end to the war.

6. On November 11, 1918 at 11 AM,
Germany signs an armistice to end
the Great War.
7. In June 1919, the Treaty of
Versailles was signed, ending the
war. Germany was forced to accept
FULL responsibility for the war !!
President Woodrow Wilson
• 8. Wilsons proposes his 14 point peace plan,
which is rejected.
• 9. Only Wilson’s idea for a “League of
Nations” is added to the treaty of
Versailles’.
• 10. The U.S. never participates in the
League of Nations because we refuse to
sign the Treaty of Versailles’
