Cell Biology
Cytology = the study of cells
(copy all the text from this slide
show into your notes)
Overview of Cytology
Cell: the simplest structure that can carry
out all the activities for life
Reproduction
Growth
Metabolism
Cell Theory: all living things are made of
cells
Human body contains between 10 and 100
trillion cells.
Cells perform a variety of functions
in an organism:
Protection from injury and disease
Transport materials
Provide structure
Process food
Allow movement
Manufacture important chemicals
Groups of cells with the same function
form tissues
examples: muscle, blood, and nerve tissues
Similar tissues are organized into
organs
examples: heart, brain
Organs that perform similar functions
make up organ systems
examples: nervous system, digestive system
Cell Structure and Function
A cell is like a factory
Most cells build large molecules
called proteins
Proteins are huge molecules that
build and “run” an organism
The different proteins produced by
your cells “make you what you are”
Cells are “protein factories”
Parts List for Cells
Cell parts are called organelles
Draw both of these figures in your notes (this slide and next)
• At least ½-page for each drawing. Use color for different structures
• Leave room around outside of each for labels
Typical Animal Cell
Typical Plant Cell
Copy information about the following cell organelles (text only)
Forms the outer layer of all cells
Controls what enters and leaves a cell
Cytoplasm
Jelly-like
material that
fills the cell
Contains the
organelles
Nucleus
Largest organelle in
the cell
Controls the activities
in the cell
Contains chromatin
(made of DNA)
Cell Wall
Only found in plant
cells
Provides rigid
structure to plants
Made of cellulose
Vacuoles
“Storage containers”
in cells
May contain water,
food, or waste
materials
Very large in plant
cells
Continue describing the functions of the
remaining organelles in your notes.
Copy the following list of organelles
Give two or three bulleted facts about the
function of each (in the same manner as the
previous five organelles).
Describe the organelle’s structure, appearance,
and/or location in the cell
Describe what the organelle does for the cell
Use the life science text (pg 46-51) or some
other source. One good online source is

Lab: Onion Epidermal Cells
Make a stained wetmount slide of a small
piece of inner onion
skin
Draw the entire view
(all visible cells) at
medium power
On one of the cells in
your drawing, label:
Cell Wall
Cell Membrane
Nucleus (and
possible Nucleolus)
Water Vacuole
Lab: Human Cheek Cells

Drop of water on slide
Moisten a cotton swab in
your mouth, then gently
rub the inside of your
cheek
Tap the swab in the
water drop
Add blue stain and cover
slip (don’t slide on!)
Draw at least five cells
at high power
On one of the cells in
your drawing, label:
Cell Membrane
Nucleus (and
possible Nucleolus)
Cytoplasm
Mitochondria
