World Drifts to War
the mid-1930’s Germany and Italy
were on military conquests.
Followed closely by Japan who
struggled for democracy.
Democracy fails by the 1930’s when the
Depression hits.
Emperor Hirohito is the military leader
over Japan.
Nickname: “Mr. Is that so”, because just
pacified the people.

a militarist leader Japan
planned a Pacific Empire that
included China.
Empire would include raw materials
and markets for goods.
In 1931, Japan seizes Manchuria
beginning this empire; rich in iron
and coal. Set puppet gov. to rule.

The
invasion was the first test for
the League of Nations.
The league was upset at the
invasion but had no power to
change it; Japan withdraws in 1933.
By 1937 Japan and China were at
full scale war.
Chinese fought back under Mao
Zedong.

Mussolini Attacks
Ethiopia
After the League of Nations did little
to Japan, Mussolini followed.
October, 1935 Italy invades 1 of 4
remaining independent nations in
Africa. (Little match for Italians)
Once again the attack is
condemned but no one stops it.

Hitler
Defies Versailles Treaty
Germany rearms with no resistance
from the League of Nations.
Soon after they invade the
Rhineland, buffer zone.
British urge appeasement, giving in
to aggressor to keep peace.

Once Hitler accomplished that he
feared no one. Kept going.
Seeing Hitler in action Mussolini
wants an alliance with Germany.
Axis Powers; Germany, Italy, and
Japan agreeing to be allies.

isolationism, avoid political ties to
other countries.
Third Reich, third German empire
continued to expand. From Austria
and Czechoslovakia to Poland and
Russia.

One last attempt at peace, the
Munich Conference held
September, 1938.
British Prime Minister believes he
can keep peace by giving a little.
Less than six months after
conference Hitler begins plan.
Britain and France ask Stalin to
help stop Hitler. But Stalin instead
signs pact with Hitler for peace.
