The Start of
World War II
Germany TURNS ANGRY
• Treaty of Versailles: What would you do?
• (4) main terms of the Treaty of Versailles:
– War Guilt Clause - Germany should accept the blame for
starting World War One
– Reparations - Germany had to pay £6,600 million for the
damage caused by the war
– Disarmament - Germany was only allowed to have a small
army and six naval ships. No tanks, no air force and no
submarines were allowed. The Rhineland area was to be demilitarized.
– Territorial Clauses - Land was taken away from Germany and
given to other countries. Union with Austria was forbidden.
The great depression and
the rise of dictators
• The German people were very
unhappy about the treaty and thought
that it was too harsh. Germany could
not afford to pay the money and
during the 1920s the people in
Germany were very poor. There were
not many jobs and the price of food
and basic goods was high. People were
dissatisfied with the government and
voted to power a man who promised
to rip up the Treaty of Versailles. His
name was Adolf Hitler.
The great depression and
the rise of dictators
• The whole world was hit by a depression
in the late 1920s. A depression is when a
country's economy falls. Trade is
reduced, businesses lose income, prices
fall and unemployment rises.
• Japan falls into a depression  Hirohito
• Italy falls into a depression  Mussolini
• Russia falls into a depression  Stalin
The Good, The Bad, and
The Ugly
• The Good: These dictators get their country
out of a depression. 
• The Bad: These dictators start to abuse their
powers. 
• The Ugly: These dictators ignore the peoples
voice and run the country into a complete
dictatorship with no say in the policies of the
country. This leads the world into war.
DISCUSSION POST #2
•
Write a short story (1-2 paragraphs) that describes what you think daily
life might have been like in Germany during the Great Depression. Your
story should include some of the hardships that people faced in the
1930’s. This will be your Discussion #2 Post. Some Questions to think
about for your story:
– If you were a German, and not knowing the future of what Hitler
would do, would you vote for Adolf Hitler to help save your
government and economy?
– Would you want one person to have all of the power in your
country at this time?
– Consider what the German people were going through (lost of
jobs, no money, no food, starvation) and how you would react to
a person who promised to help you.
•
Remember: You don’t know that Hitler later turns into a bad dictator or
what he will do to the Jewish population. You are living in the 1930’s,
and you only know about Hitler as of then.
