cold calling…..

Preference Service (CTPS)
Alison Hercock – Absolute Marketing
What is the CTPS?
• Corporate Telephone Preference Service
– Central register of corporate subscribers who
don’t want to receive ‘cold calls’
– Legal obligation for anyone making ‘cold
sales/marketing calls’ to make sure they are
not calling anyone on the register
The Legislation
• 25th June 2004 legislation introduced
• The Privacy & Electronic Communications
(EC Directive) (Amendment) Regulations 2004
• More information www.informationcommissioner.gov.uk
• Governing body - Ofcom
How Does it Work?
• Register held by the DMA (Direct Marketing
Association)
• Businesses must register ALL of their business
telephone numbers
• Takes 28 days for registration to take effect
• Stops businesses receiving ‘cold’ unsolicited
sales/marketing calls
• Implication – might not receive sales call about service
that might be of interest
Who Does it Affect?
• All businesses making outbound
sales/marketing calls
• The responsibility lies with the owner of
the data
What do you need to do?
• Ensure all data that is being ‘cold’ called is
screened against the CTPS every 28 days
• Buy a service that meets your needs
– Annual service for ongoing/monthly calling activity
– ‘Units’ based service to use as and when you need it,
for lower levels of calling activity
– Scan your data at the start of a one-off project, if
calling is infrequent and not many records are
involved
What about Email?
• Only send emails to contacts who have
expressed an interest in the subject area
• ‘Opt-In’ scheme
• Always offer ‘Opt-Out’ facility
