Rocks!
Objective:
define and describe the
three types of rocks
What is a rock?

A rock is a group of minerals bound
together

A rock can be composed of any
number of minerals (at least 2)

Rocks can be classified into three
types:
1. Igneous
2. Sedimentary
3. Metamorphic
Take 2 minutes to write down all
observations about this rock
Igneous Rocks
 Formed by the cooling of magma
and hardening of hot, molten
magma from inside the Earth.
Take 2 minutes to write down all
observations about this rock
Sedimentary Rock
 Formed by the compaction and
cementing of layers of sediments.
 Sediments are materials such as rock
fragments, plant and animal remains
and minerals that settle out of
solution onto lake and ocean bottoms.
Take 2 minutes to write down all
observations about this rock
Metamorphic Rock
 Formed by the effect of heat
and pressure on other rocks
 Metamorphic rocks typically
have foliations, which are
parallel bands running through
the rock
