1. What are the three types of
rock?
• Igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic.
2. What are the characteristics of
igneous rock?
• Created when magma or lava cools, very
hard, have no layers, may appear grainy
or have bubble holes.
3. What are some types of igneous
rock?
• Granite, obsidian, pumice, scoria,
rhyolite…
4. What are some characteristics
of sedimentary rock?
• Made when other rocks are broken down
and pressed back together, often has
layers, frequently found by bodies of
water, make up much of the rock on the
planet, may contain fossils…
5. What are some types of
sedimentary rock?
• Sandstone, limestone, shale, gypsum,
halite…
6. What are some characteristics
of metamorphic rock?
• Very hard, formed when igneous or
sedimentary rocks are squashed or
heated, may have crystals, usually solid or
without holes or spaces, rarely holds
fossils
7. What are some types of
metamorphic rock?
• Schist, gneiss, quartz, marble, graphite,
slate, coal…
8. How does the rock cycle work?
• Magma is released from underground and
cools to form igneous rock. These
igneous rocks are subjected to forms of
erosion and break down. The pieces are
pressed together to form sedimentary
rocks. Sedimentary rocks are subjected to
extreme heat or pressure and change into
metamorphic rock.
