Supplying the world
entirely with
renewable resources

October 27, 2015
Greenpeace is an independent global campaigning
organisation that acts to change attitudes and behaviour, to
protect and conserve the environment and to promote peace.
Greenpeace is present in more than 55 countries across
Europe, the Americas, Asia, Africa and the Pacific.
To maintain its independence, Greenpeace does not accept
donations from governments or corporations but relies on
contributions from individual supporters and foundation grants.
Why do we need to change the way energy is produced and
used? Let me count the ways…
The current energy system results in:
1.Climate change
2.Public health issues
3.Water scarcity and pollution
4.Energy insecurity and war
5.Oil spills
6.Air pollution
7.Acid mine drainage
8.Rising and unpredictable costs
9.Nuclear accidents/waste disposal problems
10.Etc…
3
Avoiding catastrophic climate change means staying below 2 o C
- Global GHG emissions
must decrease by at least
80% by 2050
- To get there, energy
sector (electricity, heating
and transport) must be
decarbonized

Is 100% renewable energy possible?
RE Final Energy share: 2012: 19% // 2020: 23% // 2030: 42% // 2050: 100%

The E[R] Power Sector Logic
The E[R] Power Sector Logic
How to get to 100% renewable energy by 2050
1. Phase out fossil fuels
- Lignite (2035), coal (2045), oil and gas (2050)
2. Phase out nuclear (2050)
3. Reduce energy demand (15% below current levels)
4. Increase renewables
- Solar PV, Wind (8,040 GW), CSP, hydropower,
geothermal, ocean, hydrogen, synthetic fuels,
biomass/biofuels
5. Electrify large portion of heating (19+%) and transport
demand (53%)
6. Build a smart grid, rely on energy storage, and reform
energy markets

Benefits of 100% power sector:
1. Money: Fuel costs savings means 100% RE is less
expensive than BAU
2. Jobs: Greater employment and economic development
opportunities
3. Safe climate: Only way to stay below 2 degrees C
warming

5 Takeaways
100% renewable energy by 2050 is:
1. Technically and economically achievable
2. Only way to avoid catastrophic climate change
3. Will result in more jobs in the energy sector
4. Less expensive overall than business-as-usual
5. A ready solution for access issues and energy supply
shortages
