Introduction

In my Athletic Training class, we have learned about many injuries that can
occur while playing sports. I will go through a few of them and explain
symptoms, treatment plans and how to prevent such injuries.
Concussions

Concussions are probably the most
common type of sport injuries to occur.

A concussion is caused by a sudden, hard
blow to the head. It is an injury that
shouldn’t be taken lightly.
Some ways to recognize the symptoms of a
concussion are if the athlete:






Has a severe headache
Suddenly feels drowsy
Memory loss
Nausea and vomiting
Athletes should be removed from play right
away. If serious symptoms occur, athlete
should be take to the hospital.

Sprains




A sprain is a torn or twisted ligament
that often occurs in the ankle or the
wrist.
Sprains are often confused with
strains. Strains are a tad bit more
serious and consists of muscle or
tendon being torn.
Swelling may occur in and around the
area. Bruising is also normal.
Treatment for this would include
resting the injured area and icing it
daily to bring down the swelling.
Shoulder Injuries

There are multiple injuries that can occur to
the shoulder. Two of these include:
Instability-The shoulder joint is forced out of
the socket.

Inpingement- Excessive rubbing of the
shoulder muscles against the shoulder blade.
** Early detection is VERY important in shoulder
injuries. If left untreated, surgery may be
required or permanent damage may occur.

Shoulder injuries are especially common in sports
such as : Basketball, Rugby, Tennis and
Football

Broken Leg

This can include fracturing your femur, tibia or fibula.
Medical attention should be sought immediately to prevent further injury or the
chance of the leg healing poorly.

Signs and symptoms can include:


Severe pain, especially with movement
Swelling and tenderness
Deformity or loss of complete use of the leg

Track Runner Breaks Leg


Conclusion

Though injuries in sports are almost inevitable, they can be easily prevented with the
following ways:





Proper training
Proper equipment
Conditioning
Proper nutrition
Warming up
