Sodium- Na
 Required for normal body functions
 Helps absorption of chloride, amino acids,
glucose, and water in the small intestines
 Also enhances energy and endurance
Chloride- Cl
 Helps body stay pH neutral by reducing acid
levels within the stomach
 Effectively digest food and breakdown food
to be absorbed by small intestines.
Sweat
Hyponatremia
 Inadequate amount of salt intake
 Dangerous for an athlete in training
Causes of Hypernatremia
 High blood pressure
 Too much salt in body
 Severe exercise or seizures
 Sodium overload
 Unreplaced water loss
