Hot Weather-Related Risks
Two major concerns are dehydration and
poor air quality during warm weather
Overexertion-over-working the body can
cause heat exhaustion
Heat Cramps are muscle spasms that result
from a loss of salt and water
Heatstroke is a condition in which the body
loses its ability to rid itself of excessive heat
Cold Weather-Related Risks
Consider dressing in layers and warming up
the body well
Frostbite is a condition that results when
body tissues become frozen
Hypothermia is a condition in which body
temperature becomes dangerously low
Sun and Wind Protection
Prevent windburn and sunburn
Cover the body with clothing as much as
possible
Use sunscreen and lip balm
Use sunglasses and hats to protect eyes
Minor Injuries
Muscle cramp is the
sudden tightening of a
muscle
A strain is a damaged
muscle or tendon
A sprain is an injury to a
ligament surrounding a
joint
The R.I.C.E. Procedure
Rest: Avoid using the affected muscle or joint
Ice: Ice the affected area for 20 minutes to
reduce pain and swelling
Compression: Use an elastic bandage to
apply light pressure
Elevation: Raise the affected limb above the
heart to reduce pain and swelling
Major Injuries
Fractures and
Dislocations: breaks in
the bone or when the
bone is out of position
Tendonitis: tendons
stretched or torn from
overuse
Concussions: blows to
the head
