Goals for the 2015-2016 School Year
 To create a safe, nurturing, and exciting learning environment
for your child.
 To allow your child to grow as an independent thinker, problem
solver, and take responsibility for their own learning.
 To provide your child with tools that will help them achieve
their goals and access information in a responsible way.
 To enable all children to explore new ideas and expand their
knowledge base.
 To use critical and creative thinking skills that can apply to
learning throughout their life.
 To create a class of culturally aware and sensitive students
that will work hard to make the world around them a better
place to be.
What third graders can do:
During this school year, I hope to see many child grow and develop skills.
In third grade, children continue to extend and refine their reading and
writing to suit varying purposes and audiences
 Read fluently and enjoy reading
 Use a range of strategies when drawing meaning from the text
 Use word identification strategies appropriately and automatically
when encountering unknown words
 Recognize and discuss elements of different text structures
 Make critical connections between texts
 Write expressively in many different forms (stories, poems, reports)
 Use a rich variety of vocabulary and sentences appropriate to text
forms
 Revise and edit their own writing during and after composing
 Spell words correctly in final writing drafts
Reading
A balanced and comprehensive literacy approach is used. This
includes shared reading, guided reading, and independent
reading, as well as read-alouds, literature circles, Daily 5 of
reading, and explicit reading and writing skill lessons.
The skills include the following:
1) Connecting 2) Predicting 3) Questioning 4) Inferring
5) Synthesizing/Visualization 6) Evaluating/Applying
Writing
 Writing using the Writer’s Workshop
Students write for many purposes with emphasis on explanatory
and descriptive writing. Students also practice basic research
skills, with an emphasis on information collection, summary and
paraphrasing and identifying resources. Paragraph writing will
also be a focus.

Flexible grouping
Students are placed into classes based on pre-test performance for each unit.
Post tests given as well.
 Students are grouped flexibly throughout the year.
