NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASES: CARDIOVASCULAR
NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASES: CARDIOVASCULAR
Target: I will be able to describe symptoms of
cardiovascular diseases
Non-communicable Disease: a disease that is noninfectious
Lifestyle Disease: A disease associated with the way a
person lives.
• Examples: Cardiovascular disease, obesity, type 2
diabetes
Pg. 57
Cardiovascular Disease (CVD): Diseases which affect
the heart and circulatory system
• 610,000 people die of heart disease in the US
every year–that’s 1 in every 4 deaths.
Risk Factors for Cardiovascular Diseases:
1. Heredity- heart disease runs in family
2. Ethnicity- African Americans are 2 times more likely
to develop CVD
3. Gender- males have a greater risk of heart disease
and stroke
• Heart attacks are the #1 killer of women
4. Age- CVD increases with age; especially after 45
5. Environment- smog, tobacco smoke, and stress
6. Behavior- physical inactivity, smoking, alcohol use,
bad food choices (high fat/sodium), obesity
• Make healthy choices now to reduce risk of CVD
and stroke later
Types of Cardiovascular Diseases:
1. Hypertension: high blood pressure (the force of
blood flow against the artery walls)
• The more blood your heart pumps and the
narrower your arteries, the higher your BP
• May not show symptoms- aka “the silent killer”
• Leads to heart attacks and strokes
• Controlled by: eating well (reducing fats/salts),
lose weight/exercise, medication
2. Arteriosclerosis: Hardening of the arteries that
restricts blood and oxygen to organs
• One type is- Atherosclerosis: Plaque (fat
deposits) build up on the walls of the arteries
because of poor food choices (high
fat/cholesterol).
• If a blood clot forms, it can stop blood flow,
causing a heart attack or stroke

3. Congestive Heart Failure: a slow gradual
weakening of the heart from years of overwork
• Blood moves though the body at a slower rate and
pressure in the heart increases (heart size
increases)
• Kidneys respond by causing the body to retain
(hold onto) water and salt (heart gets bigger)

Heart Attack: Blood flow to part of the heart is
blocked by a clot and oxygen supply is cut off
• Symptoms: Angina Pectoris (pain and tightening
in the chest), pain down arms, pain in jaw, neck,
upper abdomen, or back, nausea, sweating,
vomiting, and shortness of breath

Stroke: an interruption of the flow of blood to any
part of the brain
• Brain cells are blocked or broken and deprived
of oxygen and die within minutes
• Most likely causes: uncontrolled hypertension and
atherosclerosis
• Symptoms: sudden weakness/numbness in face,
arm, or leg on one side of the body, loss of
speech/ trouble speaking, trouble understanding,
loss of vision is one eye, dizziness, unsteadiness,
or sudden falls
• FAST- Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech
difficulty, Time to call 911

will help you remember what they are/what happens to the
body.
