Spelling “rule” of the week:
Do NOT double the final consonant
before adding –ing, -ed, -er, or -est
in words ending in w or x.
Exceptions: (related rules to be learned in
future weeks)
Focus Rule Words:
1) waxed (wax + ed)
2) shallower (shallow + er)
3) guffawed (guffaw + ed)
(guffaw = explosive laughter)
4) throwing (throw + ing)
5) rawest (raw + est)
Academic Verbs:
6) justify to show a satisfactory reason or defense for
something being done; cleared of guilt, excused
Is the character justified in her anger toward her dad?
7) maintain in writing, this means the same as “asserts”
or “keeps arguing that”
The author maintains the notion that people will do
anything for love.
8) presume to assume in advance (before)
We can presume that all seventh graders completed
sixth grade.
