Kingdom Fungi
Includes mushrooms, morels,
molds, shelf fungi, and yeasts
Fungi Evolution
Thought to have originated from protists
similar to slime molds
became multicellular
Cell Structure of Fungi
Most multicellular (not yeast), eukaryotic,
and, like plants, has cell wall
How do Fungi get energy?
Heterotrophic: digest food by breaking it
down outside & absorbing it into their
cells (saprophyte)
DO NOT
photosynthesize
To maintain Homeostasis:
Found in almost any moist environment
spores can stay
dormant for years
Reproduction of Fungi
Asexually: hyphae break off,
new fungi grows, or
asexual spore
Sexually: grow from
zygospore containing two
organisms' DNA
How do Fungi fit in the world?
Major decomposers: recycle nutrients back to
the soil
Can be food for others, or used in food
production
Edible mushrooms
cheese
But wait, there’s more…
Parasites--cause disease (athlete's foot,
yeast infection,wheat rust)
Mutualistic (lichens and blue-green
bacteria)
