Jefferson County Watersheds
Coalition Group Work.
• We designed our web pages around the
JCWC information.
• We organized ideas and research into a
usable and distributable pamphlet
• We sampled water from local streams
such as Town Run. (tentatively)

Websites
• Erin, Geoff, and Jason all designed our
websites around the JCWC, which included
mission statements, plans of action,
project updates, and schedule of events.

Conclusion
• The Jefferson County Watersheds
Coalition cannot help protect our
community without regular donations from
private sources, and without volunteer
support from you!

“Listen to the Town Run”
• The Town Run is…
She-Town History…
For the future!
Jason Drappo
The past 15 years have been an economic boom
for this region!
Residential, Commercial, and Industrial buildings
are growing daily, covering land that farms used
to be run on.
As water usage rates increase, the overall
availability of clean water becomes more scarce;
and fuels the need for new filtration centers.
Escherichia coli 0157:H7
• Commonly referred to as E. coli there are
•
•
thousands of different E. coli strains, more than
just this one can make you sick also.
E. coli are bacteria that live in the intestines of
living animals and plants. This particular strain
lives in cattle.
If a cow is killed on a farm and it contaminates
the watershed with the bacteria, it could make
everyone sick that drinks the water.
Sickness effects of E. coli
• If you drink contaminated water we can develop
•
•
•
bloody diarrhea; and sometimes kidney failure.
Unlucky patients can develop various lifelong
complications.
E. coli infects 73,000 people and kills roughly 61
people each year.
Current filtration techniques are not all effective;
only reverse osmosis systems can protect your
or by boiling your water can you maintain
complete safety.
New Filtration Techniques Needed!
• Currently researchers are looking into new
•
•
techniques to help maintain watersheds
integrity, but this is very costly.
Constant testing is needed on local streams for
E. coli levels, and most of the organizations that
do test streams are funded by private donation.
The Jefferson County Watersheds Coalition does
all the testing in our area, and they desperately
need the communities support to help maintain
a safe environment for all of Jefferson County.
Jefferson County Growth
Concerns
By: Geoff Klecan
Brief History
• First Settlement in Shepherdstown, WV
• The B&O Railroad and the C&O Canal
served as a lifeline to Jefferson County
• Opened expansion into the wilderness of
Western Virginia (now West Virginia)
• Became farming and mining communities
throughout the region
What is affected by Development?
• The beauty of the land becomes cluttered
• Wildlife is forced to relocate or adapt to
the changing community
• Pollution occurs – air, water, etc.
• In some ways, the overall quality of life
decreases
So What Can Be Done?
• We need to pay close attention to
excessive construction in the region
• Use Frederick County as a reference/guide
to what potentially can occur in Jefferson
County
• Develop organizations to keep WV
beautiful and clean (ex. JCWC)
• Remember, WV’s motto is
“Wild and Wonderful”
