Introduction
What is the most popular web browser, and why?
Web Browsers
Netscape Navigator
Safari
Comes with Apple Macs
Internet Explorer 7
Comes with Windows
Firefox 3
Free from Mozilla
Firefox 3 Attracts Users from Internet Explorer 6
Unlike Internet Explorer 6, Firefox 3 has:
Tabbed browsing
Internet explorer did have tabbed browsing in an alternate
interface, but they did not capitalize on the feature as Firefox did
An integrated search box
User customization of 5000 third-party add-ons
Firefox is also capable of being used on three
different operating systems.
Acid2 Test
Finds problems with web browsers
From the Web Standards Project
Browsers that follow the World Wide Web
Consortium HTML and CSS 2.0 specifications pass.
Internet Explorer 7 failed the Acid2 test
Safari was the first to pass in 2005
Internet Explorer is the only major browser that has
yet to pass this test
However, IE 8, that is to be released in 2009, is said to be
Acid2 compliant.
Conclusion
Internet Explorer 8 is coming out in 2009 but there
are doubts that it will be able to attract as many
users as Firefox since it lacks customizability and is
not available for use without Windows.
Firefox may soon be the most popular web browser.
