Round and Round
(www.windows.ucar.edu/.../ seasons_orbit.5x7.jpg)
• The Sun is the center
of our solar system.
• The Earth’s
movement around
the Sun is called it’s
orbit
• It takes one year to
complete an entire
orbit around the Sun.
• During Earth’s orbit
we experience
changes in climate
called “Seasons”.
Super Size Me!
(eearthk.com/website/ images/earth/E20.jpg)
• The Sun is
approximately
1.4 million
kilometers
(870,000 miles) in
diameter.
• Meaning that 109
earth’s could fit
across its middle.
• The Sun’s interior
could hold over
1.3 million Earths
(Wow!!)
• Our sun is a mid
size star, there are
some stars larger
and smaller than it
Hot and Hotter
(www.nasa.gov/.../161863main_ hinode_sun_516.jpg)
• The outer visible
layer called
photosphere and has a
temperature of
6,000°C (11,000°F).
• The inner layers reach
temperatures of
15,000,000° C;
(27,000,000° F).
What are you made of?

Outer glare,or glow is called
the Corona
The Chromosphere is the
layer only observable during
eclipses (lower left)
Outer visible layer called
Photosphere
Below Photosphere is
Convection zone
Below Convection zone is
the Radiation zone
Center is called the core
What's My Age Again?
(www.cnn.com/.../ images/sun.earth.lrg.jpg)
Our Sun is about
middle age for a
star of its type,
which means it is
about 4.6 billion
years old. It is
estimated that the
Sun will be around
for about another
5 billion years.
What’s in it for me?

ST KATHARINES DOCK DIAL
This is a large equinoctial sundial in
the form of a massive, 3.66 meters,
stainless steel ring supported by
three rigid chain link cables. The
dial was designed by Wendy Taylor
in 1973 and delineated by
Christopher St J Daniels

Lets do an Activity !
Things to think about.
Are Sundials precision instruments for
measuring time? Why or Why not?
Are Sundials useful during all types of
weather?
