Italian Renaissance Humanism
Humanism was based on the
classics of Greece & Rome.
They studied poetry,
philosophy, & history.
(B) Petrarch used forgotten Latin
and he emphasized using pure
classical Latin.

Vernacular Literature
The Italian works of Dante & the English
works of Geoffrey Chaucer helped make
this literature more popular.
 Dante’s Divine Comedy poem had 3 parts:
Hell, Purgatory, & Heaven.
 Chauncer’s wrote The Canterbury Tales, a
story of 29 pilgrims going to the tomb of
Saint Thomas Becket at Canterbury.

Education in the Renaissance



Renaissance
humanists believed
that education could
change human beings.
They stressed history,
rhetoric, grammar,
poetry, math, and
music.
They also stressed
physical education and
dancing.

They wanted to
create complete
citizens, females
rarely attended
school. Those that
did received an
education in
religion, morals, &
domestic skills.
Artistic Renaissance in Italy



A fresco is a painting
done on wet plaster
with water based
paints.
The realistic portrayal
of individual persons,
especially the human
nude, became one of
the chief aims of
Italian Renaissance
art.
Donatello modeled his
figures on Greek &
Roman statues.

Raphael, &
Michelangelo
dominated the 14901520 period. Leonardo
mastered realistic
painting.
Raphael famous fresco
School of Athens,
reveals balance,
harmony & order.
Michelangelo was
know for painting the
Sistine Chapel, Rome.
Northern Artistic Renaissance


Belgium, Luxemburg,
& the Netherlands
illustrated books &
wooden panels for
altarpieces.
Jan van Eyck was the
first to use oil paint,
he could use a wide
number of colors &
create fine details.
