• The Renaissance was a transition from the
Middle Ages into Modern times
• it means rebirth or reawakening
• it began in Northern Italy
• During this time period it was an honor to
be called a Renaissance Man; it meant you
were well rounded - secular

• Renaissance ideas migrate North to
Holland, Belgium, Germany
• There was little influence from Classical
ideals-portrayed common , everyday themes
• Did not stress architecture and sculpture
• Painting was the art form of choice
• Used oil paint and a technique called
glazing
