THE BAROQUE PERIOD
AND CARAVAGGIO
BAROQUE PERIOD AROUND-1600-1750
• The Baroque (US /bəˈroʊk/ or UK
/bəˈrɒk/) is often thought of as a
period of artistic style that used
exaggerated motion and clear, easily
interpreted detail to produce drama,
tension, exuberance, and grandeur
in sculpture, painting, architecture,
literature, dance, theater, and music.
• Baroque style featured "exaggerated
lighting, intense emotions, release from
restraint, and even a kind of artistic
sensationalism". Baroque art did not
really depict the life style of the people
at that time; however, "closely tied to
the Counter-Reformation, this style
melodramatically reaffirmed the
emotional depths of the Catholic faith
and glorified both church and
monarchy" of their power and
influence.[17]
THE ECSTASY OF ST. THERESA BY
LORENZO BERNINI
Saint Teresa
Canonized (made a
saint by the
Church) largely for the
spiritual visions she
experienced, Teresa of
Ávila was a nun who
lived in 16th
century Spain, at the
height of the
Reformation.
WHO WAS CARAVAGGIO?
Caravaggio was born as Michelangelo
Merisi in Italy around 1571. He was
orphaned at age 11 and apprenticed with
a painter in Milan. He moved to Rome,
where his work became popular for the
tenebrism technique he used, which used
shadow to emphasize lighter areas. His
career, however, was short-lived.
Caravaggio killed a man during a brawl
and fled Rome. He died not long after, on
July 18, 1610.
DAVID WITH THE HEAD OF GOLIATH
Chiaroscuro (English
pronunciation:
/kiˌɑːrəˈskjʊəroʊ/; Italian:
[ˌkjaroˈskuːro] (light-dark)) is
an oil painting technique,
developed during the
Renaissance, that uses strong
tonal contrasts between light
and dark to model threedimensional forms, often to
dramatic effect.[1]

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN
RENAISSANCE AND BAROQUE ART?
• The Renaissance period for art began in the 1400s
in Italy, which today is considered the art capital of
the world, together with Paris. This period was
considered one of the most important in Europe’s
history as it marked the transition from medieval
times into early modern age. The Baroque era soon
followed in the 1600s, as another transformation
came about when the church began to divide
between Protestants and Roman Catholics. It is no
wonder many creations in this period were
recreations of famous works in the Renaissance era.
