Biomes!
Biomes
Ecosystem: a community of interdependent organisms and the
environment they inhabit.
Biome- collection of ecosystems that share similar climactic conditions.
Different types of Biomes:
Tropical Forest
Savanna
Desert
Temperate Grassland
Chaparral
Temperate Forest
Polar (High Mountain)
Coniferous Forest
Tundra
Productivity
Productivity: making something per unit area/ per unit time.
EX: The tree grows one foot every year.
Gross Productivity: Total gain in energy or biomass per unit area/
per unit time before deductions.
- Energy is used up through respiration (breathing) and staying
alive, so it is not used to grow.
Net Productivity: Is the gain in energy or biomass per unit area/ per
unit time after respiration.
- The gain in energy or biomass used to grow.
Productivity
Net Primary Productivity (NPP): total gain in energy and biomass of
plants.
Net Secondary Productivity (NSP): total gain in energy and biomass of
animals.
Net Primary Productivity (NPP)
• The actual amount of plant material gained
• Stored energy and potential food for consumers.
• NPP = GPP – R
Net primary productivity = Gross Primary productivity - respiration
Net Secondary Productivity (NSP)
• The actual amount of energy and material used to grow.
• NSP = GSP – R
Net secondary productivity = Gross secondary productivity - respiration
and food waste (poop)
Deciduous vs Coniferous
Deciduous – Plant that lose their leaves in the Fall
Coniferous- Evergreen, trees that do not lose their leaves
