Describe the different types of instruments used to take weather
measurements.

•WEEKLY WS #28:
•If you did not have the benefit of the weather forecast
on the news, radio, or television, how would you forecast
the weather?

Weather Forecasting
Technology
Weather balloon
Carries
electronic
equipment into upper
atmosphere
Wind sock or vane
Indicates
wind
directions
Doppler radar
Tracks
precipitation
Weather satellites
Provides
images/data
of weather systems
over large areas
Weather Forecasting
Barometer
An instrument that
measures atmospheric
pressure
One end open so air
pressure can move the
mercury level within
The higher the air
pressure, the better the
weather
Weather Forecasting
Anemometer
An instrument used to
measure wind speed
Faster the cups spin,
the faster the wind is
moving
Weather Forecasting
Thermometer
How does temperature
effect weather?
An instrument that
measures and
indicates temperature
Warm temperatures
can bring humidity and
rain
Cold temperatures can
bring dry air and snow
Temperature
Isotherms
Lines that connect areas of similar
temperature.

Questions to Consider:
How
do the isotherms help you to understand what
weather is like in different parts of the country?
How might this be useful in forecasting the weather
conditions in a particular area?
What patterns can you see in temperatures? Where is
it typically warmer? Where are the temperatures
typically cooler?
What reasons can you think of to explain the
temperature patterns you notice?

collecting data on atmospheric conditions? Why?
