Major Functions
 It breaks down food into tiny materials that the body
needs
 It absorbs nutrients from the food
Food Path

•The first step of the digestion occurs when the teeth chew and grind up food into small pieces that form a ball-shaped bolus
which makes the food faster to swallow. While in the mouth, salivary glands release an enzyme known as salivary amylase,
which digest the carbohydrates in the food being chewed. When that food is chewed up enough, it goes straight to the
esophagus. The esophagus is a long tube-like tract of hollow organs that use downward muscular contractions. This makes the
food go straight to the stomach. Once in the stomach, food boluses are further digested by a variety of digestive enzymes found
in the stomach. Next, the food goes into the small intestine, the digestive juices of the liver and pancreas are mixed with the
food. The pancreas releases enzymes that digest fat, carbohydrates, & protein particals in the food. While the liver produces
bile, which is stored between meals in the gallbladder and released through bile ducts at mealtime. The food then travels
through the large intestine, or colon, where they become apart of solid feces.

How Body System Works
 The digestive system works very closely to the
circulatory system to get the absorbed nutrients
distributed through your body.
3 Examples
 The gut is apart of the circulatory system which is 30
percent of the digestive system
 You need the circulatory system to digest the food
properly
 The delivery of nutrients to the blood stream
4 Interesting Facts
 There are 2 types of digestion ; mechanical and
chemical
 Your stomach doesn’t just rumble when you’re
hungry
 The adult stomach has a very small volume.
When empty , it can expand to hold up to 15
layers of food
 Not all food can be digested
