Digestion Review
•MOUTH
•Mechanical and Chemical Digestion begin in the mouth
•Saliva is produced by the salivary glands and contains enzymes
which help to speed up the process of digestion. This is the
Chemical Part of digestion in the mouth.
•The teeth and tongue help to break up the food you eat – this is the
mechanical part of digestion in the mouth.
•ESOPHAGUS
•coated in mucus
•Connects the mouth to the stomach
•A wave like motion called peristalsis moves food down this organ.
•STOMACH
•J-shaped organ
•Coated in mucus so the hydrochloric acid that helps the enzyme
pepsin will not burn the lining (ulcers)
•Muscles here mechanically break down food while enzymes
chemically break it down.
•SMALL INTESTINES
•MOST CHEMICAL DIGESTION TAKES PLACE HERE!
•The pancreas sends juices here and the liver sends the bile (which
is stored in the gall bladder)
•The Small intestine even makes its own juices full of enzymes
•Villi at the end of the S.I. absorb food into the bloodstream so it can
be taken to all parts of the body
•LARGE INTESTINES
•Undigested food moves here to prepare to exit the body
•Water is absorbed here
•Vit K is produced here
•Last part called rectum
•End of Rectum – Anus
