Hi I’m going to be
showing you where
the food is in the
digestive system! But
first you need to learn
a little about it.
Food
We eat food to feed are cells to make energy.
Esophagus
The digestive system starts when you eat food and swallow it.
Then the food goes down your esophagus and then the food
is called the bolus so its not called pancakes anymore.
Stomach
After the food starts in your throat it starts heading to your
stomach. Muscles along the length of the esophagus contract
to push the bolus along. The stomach is not just used for
storing food. Things get rough down there. The muscles in
the stomach squeeze and mash the food/bolus. Then the food
changes into a thick runny liquid.
Small intestines
The bolus moves into the small intestine, which can be 6 meters
long(20 feet). It is so thin that it will fit around you even if you
aren’t 20 feet tall. Juices are added. And that’s when food
changes into nutrients that cells can use. Sugar is the most
important nutrient. In the small intestine there are millions of
capillaries. Sugar and other nutrients pass through the sides
of the intestine and into the capillaries. Inside the small
intestine there are little things called vile. The small intestine
is as small as two of your fingers!
Large intestine
The left over food leaves the small intestine and flows through
the large intestine and colon. By this time almost all nutrients
has been taken out. Water is taken out of the food mass. The
material remaining is composed of fiber, indigestive material,
and dead bacteria. This is called the feces. The feces moves
into the rectum. Here the waste is kept until it can be taken
away through the anus. Until you use the bathroom the food
stays in your anus.
