Exploration: The Good, the
Bad, and the Ugly.
The Good
• School’s were created to teach people how to be
better navigators, sailors, and mapmakers.
• The most famous school was created by Prince
Henry the Navigator of Portugal.
• New instruments like the compass and astrolabe
made navigation easier.
The Good
• New ships called caravels were created
at his school allowing explorers to go
faster and further.
The Good
• For the first time people from all over the world
interacted with one another and shared their
culture.
• New ideas and goods now traveled around the
world.
The Bad
• The Europeans took advantage of other
countries because they had better
weapons.
• (guns)
• Wars were fought as Europeans tried to
conquer the new lands.
The Ugly
• The 2 worst parts of the age of exploration
were death from diseases and slavery.
Diseases
• Europeans introduced diseases that
Native Americans had no immunity to.
• This meant their body would die rapidly
from things like the flu, cold, chicken pox,
small pox, and measles.

smallpox
Diseases
• 80% or higher of the Native American
population died from common European
diseases.
• Disease helped bring about the end of
Empires like the Aztecs and Incans.
African Slavery
• Originally the Europeans
used the Native Americans
as slaves, but once so
many died from diseases
they needed more workers.
• So the Europeans started
trading with the Africans
to acquire African slaves.
Europeans sailed down to Africa, traded for
slaves, then sailed to the Americas, there the
slaves were traded for goods, finally they sailed
back to Europe and the process started again.
Middle Passage
• This was the part of the
trip from Africa to the Americas.
• Thousands of Africans died
on the ships due to the bad
conditions on the ship.
