What is a “colony”?
1. A colony is a settlement in a foreign land
ruled by the mother country.
2. A colony has its own government but is
ultimately ruled by the mother country
3. Types of colonies:
– Trading Post
– Settler
– Plantation
Trading Post Colony
1. Established for trading items for PROFIT
(think of a General Store)
2. Usually along an established TRAVEL
ROUTE
3. First traded gold, silver, spices and
minerals of the area they were located in.
Plantation colony
1. Large areas of land used to farm CASH
CROPS
2. CASH CROP is farmed to make a
PROFIT (money)
3. Had slaves and native Indians work the
land
4. Sugarcane first cash crop grown in
Americas (West Indies)
Settler Colony
1. Established as NEW TOWNS for people
to live PERMANATELY and set up
business for profit
2. Have own government, but ruled by
