Why did Europeans search for new
land?
The 3 G’s: Causes of Exploration
• European nations were making lots of
money trading with China.
– Began competing with each other.
– Mercantilism – economic theory that nations
power depends on wealth.
• Portugal led exploration
• Spain wanted to compete!
Luckily…
Christopher Columbus came along!
Christopher Columbus
– Wanted to find better
route to Asia but
needed money
– Asked Spain for
money and ships!
– So he took off and
landed…
Didn’t quite make it!
• Thought he made it
to islands south of
China.
– Called them “West
Indies”
• Spain sent a ton
more ships and
people to colonize
the new world.
• Many priests would
go on voyages to
spread Christianity.
• Tried and even
forced the native
people to convert.
• Explorers who returned to their home
country successfully were met with
honor.
• Climbed the “social ladder” and were
considered heroes.
