Cartography- the making of maps
Lateen sail-triangular sail that was of decisive
importance to medieval navigation
Compass- instrument used to guide explorers
Astrolabe- medieval instrument used for navigation
Post Ship Rutter- device for governing, directing, or
guiding a course
Harrison’s Clock- tool used to determine longitude
REASONS FOR EXPLORATION
Looking for spices, gold, heroic expeditions,
convert people to Christianity and looking for
land for expanding populations
Portuguese
go South to find these spices along the
coast of Africa and the Spanish go West to find
these spices. Spain had been weakened by the
Spanish Inquisition.
Mercantilism- policy by which a nation sought to
export more than it imports in order to build its
supply of gold and silver
Line of Demarcation- line created by Pope to divide up
the new lands that were being discovered between
Spain and Portugal
Spain received the rights to the land West of the line and
Portugal received the land East of the line. Agreement was
made with the Treaty of Tordesillas.
Spain, France and England look for a ‘Northwest passage’ to
Asia.
Columbian Exchange- the global exchange of goods,
ideas, plants, and animals and disease that began
with Columbus’ exploration of the Americas

America and materials went to Europe
Things that were traded; slaves, diseases,
guns, coffee, sugar, pigs, horses.
