Timeline for Portuguese Exploration
European exploration began for several reasons.
- knowledge of China from Marco Polo (1254-1324)
Spices, gold, exotic products
- Monopolization of trade by the Italians
- Limited access to Asian land routes
- Renaissance ideas were a driving force
All these became the push for European Expansion

1415- Crusading spirit-Ports seized Ceuta in North Africa
This sparked the interest of the Portuguese King, Henry
Henry built schools, gathered scientists, cartographers
and builders- all in an attempt to improve exploration.
Portuguese began sending annual expeditions to Africa
Eventually muscled in on gold trade in Africa
1487- Bartolomew Diaz rounded the Cape of Good Hope
1497-1499 Vasco da Gama rounded Africa- returned home
1498- Portuguese begin to muscle in on Muslim trade.
1502-1520 no Moluccan spices traveled Red Sea
Portuguese carried ¼ of goods

1500 King Manual dispatched 13 ships that landed on the coast
of Brazil.


Pedro Alvarez Cabral- then proceeded around the Cape to India (6)

1509- 1515 captured Malacca and continued to try to expand
As the Portuguese spread influence, they spread Christianity

Spain was unified under Isabella and Ferdinand
They has just finished completing the Reconquista
Christopher Columbus sailed in August of 1492 and
returned March of 1993.

