OVERVIEW:
As Europe emerged from the Middle Ages
(500 - c. 1450), fundamental changes
stimulated interest in overseas exploration.
The Crusades, Renaissance, and the rise of
absolute monarchs in the Old World fueled a
“commercial revolution” in which adventurous
navigators sought new routes to Asia around
Africa and across the Atlantic.
Stimulated demand for Eastern goods (spices, sugar, silk, etc.)
