Florence Nightingale
1820-1910
Born in Florence, Italy
Founder of modern day nursing
In 1844, decided to work in a
hospital
Credited for improving knowledge
and conditions in public health
nursing
Served as a nurse in the Crimean
War 1853-1856, improving
conditions in the military
What is Nursing?
Nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of
health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury,
alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and
treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care
of individuals, families, communities, and populations.

What Nurses Do
Perform physical exams and health histories
Provide health promotion, counseling and education
Administer medications, wound care, and numerous
other personalized interventions
Interpret patient information and make critical
decisions about needed actions
Coordinate care, in collaboration with a wide array of
healthcare professionals
Direct and supervise care delivered by other
healthcare personnel like LPNs and nursing aids
Conduct research in support of improved practice and
patient outcomes

Undergraduate Degree:
Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN): two year degree offered by
community colleges
Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BS/BSN): four year degree offered at colleges
Graduate Degree:
Master’s Degree (MSN): offers a number of tracks to prepare educators,
administrators, or Advanced Practice Nurses
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD): usually research programs
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP): focuses on clinical practice or leadership
and universities
NCLEX-RN: Licensure
National Council Licensure Examination
Must be taken to become a registered nurse

Hours That Accommodate You
Nursing is a 24 hour operation in many places, offering a variety
of working schedules for nurses
4, 8, or 12 hour shifts—may be a combination of all, if desired
Part-time or full time shifts
PRN nursing—may work as needed
Many allow trading of shifts between nurses
Self scheduling offered by many—allows for autonomy in choosing
days

How to Get Started Now
Maintain a good GPA while in high school—it will benefit you later
If possible, begin classes related to healthcare in your school now
Volunteer or work at a hospital or other healthcare related agency afterschool
or during the summer
Talk with your parents, teachers, guidance counselors, nurses, or other
healthcare professionals, that can help you with making the decision
Read books about healthcare in your school library or local library
Possess a willingness to be an independent learner
Be positive and confident in your life
Have a caring heart
