Document time of death, names of those present and who was informed in
nursing records
Document in appropriate place the description of all jewellery removed and
that remaining with patient
Ensure that two ‘Notification of Death’ labels are written and attached
Write the time of death, which relatives have been notified and the support
given, who certified death in the nursing notes
Inform colleagues arriving on the following shift that the patient has died.
Ensure other departments, and agencies are aware that the patient has
died.
Dignity and privacy was maintained after death
Sudden or unexpected death – do not remove equipment
If there is a risk of contamination of body fluids from the deceased
patient, it needs to be placed in a waterproof body bag.
Need to be aware of patients belonging to different religions. eg: Hindu;
Jewish, Buddhist (McGee, 2002)
