South Beach Diet
By: Eric Kim
Background
• Florida based cardiologist Arthur Agatston
created a simple diet to help prevent serious
medical conditions such as diabetes and
hearth disease
What is the point of this diet?
• To change the overall balance of foods you eat
to encourage weight loss
• Teaches eliminating bad carbs
• Limits unhealthy fats
How this Diet works?
• The diet is divided in to 3 phases where you
would have 3 meals, 2 snacks, and 1 dessert per
day
• Phase 1: two-weeks where you eliminate food
craving that is high in sugars
• Cutting out almost all carbohydrates
• No fruit juice or alcohol
• Only lean protein such as fish, seafood etc.
• Eat high fiber vegetables, low-fat dairy
Phase 2
• Long-term process to weight loss
• As days go by, slowly add the good
carbohydrate foods:
• Whole-grain breads, whole-wheat pasta,
brown rice etc. until goal is reached
Phase 3
• In phase 3, the purpose is to maintain the
healthy eating and lifestyle that is carried over
from phase 2
• Also in this phase you can include fitness
training and other activities to fulfill the
healthy lifestyle
Conclusion
• Research states that you will lose 8-12 pounds
throughout the first phase
• 1-2 pound loss in the second phase
• You will end up with improved blood pressure,
with eating healthy carbs
Compared from the course material
• In the course material, it says that you should
eat every 3-4 hours to prevent food craving
• The South beach diet consists of 3 meals a
day, 2 snacks and 1 dessert
• Overall, the diet helps the craving
Amount of food per day
• As teenagers(intended for men), we like to eat a
lot since our body is still growing and puberty and
such
• The food guide states that one should eat 7-8
servings of fruits or vegetables, 6-7 servings of
whole grain foods, 3-4 servings of dairy, and 3
servings of meat
• The south beach diet actually cuts down the
amount of whole grain foods in the 1st phase
• So eating healthy in the diet is unbalanced
Personal thoughts
• I personally think that for any teenager that is out
there even if they are over weight, this diet is not
a healthy plan
• Research shows that you lose 8-13lbs during the
first phase, which is a dramatic decrease of
weight
• Also, cutting out ALL of carbohydrates during the
first phase is unhealthy
• I do not think that it is worth to go through this
tough diet to lose a couple pounds
