Nursing in England
Emily Stone
The National Health Service
The NHS was founded in 1948, by the labour government.
It was the first time hospitals, doctors, nurses, pharmacists,
opticians and dentists were all under the same roof.
The aim was that the health service will be available to all and
financed entirely from taxation, which means that people pay
into it according to their means.
The NHS has a set price for all prescriptions, or you can buy a
card which will pay for 3 months medicines all at once. The fee
per prescription is £7.85 per medicine. There are exemptions to
this too.
In the early 90s dentists left the NHS, however there are still NHS
dentists which have their salary supplemented by the NHS and
the most a patient will pay is £189 for a treatment.

a specific module

helps to prepare us
for practice on our

The Nursing and Midwifery

These are the people
that give us our
license to practice.

us).
Hospital Differences
Lack of gloves, masks, aprons.
The hospital ran out of pain relief.
No curtains.
Some students did not know that
a patient could sue for
malpractice.
Nurses do not participate in
personal care.
Cut, fold and prepare gauze.
Toilet roll is not provided.
Doctors do a lot of dressing
changes and you have special
nurse's for dressing changes.
Mum's can spend 3-5 days in
hospital post natal.
There is no option for a water birth.
Mum's of premature babies stay in
hospital too.
There is not hand sanitiser at the
bottom of every bed.
Emergency departments are very
similar – but I have never seen
sucker electrodes.
X-rays are developed onto film –
ours go onto a computer.
Medication is dispensed by
pharmacy on a daily basis –
we keep a “ward stock”.
Best Difference
None of this matters!
Patients still feel well cared for.
Nurse's are respected and
appreciated.
People like you see what a good
job they do and choose to join the
profession!
