The Optimizer Product
• A mobile network optimising product as a part of a larger network
management software suite.
• Uses actual measured information about the network to optimise its
configuration and performance.
• The measurements are done by individual mobile phones and collected
by the network.
• Optimizer gets the network data from the NW management software
platform and makes an optimised NW configuration plan based on the
data.
• The optimised plan is then made available to other NW management
software to make actual changes to the network.

The Challenging Upgrade
• The Optimizer is a part of a larger product portfolio and has connections
to external databases.
• The Optimizer’s database upgrade is performed along with wider platform
upgrade where individual product upgrades are controlled by automated
scripts.
• The Optimizer itself has many optional modules.
• Several versions of the Optimizer and its database schema exists
• at some locations has not been installed at all
• has been partly installed
• maintenance updates
The upgrade has become increasingly complex and requires manual
checks and operations.

• A Java application for database upgrade
• has also its own UI, but is meant to be used automatically from other
applications
• resolves automatically required changes to current DB schema
• The upgrade target DB schema is given with an XML file.

• Resolves the current DB schema from a DB connection and creates
required SQL scripts.
• Uses the database metadata to query e.g. table structures, constraints,
indexes, sequences, users and privileges, ...

• The tool can also be used to just create an XML file from an existing DB
schema.
• Supports both Oracle and MySQL databases.
• High requirements for error handling and logging
• robust, reliable and configurable
• Some requirements for the development
• Used technologies: Java, XML, PL/SQL, Oracle, MySQL
• Knowledge on how to extract needed DB data from Oracle and MySQL
• Good quality and reliable functioning of the tool
• Good quality expected also for the source code and specifications
