The arts, artifacts, entertainment,
fads, beliefs, values, etc… that are
shared by large collectives of
society.
Example of Pop Culture today:
Who controls Pop Culture? (Pg.82)
Many believe that pop culture is dictated by
the media and communication technology.
Thus, those that control media and
communication, also control what is popular.
However, media and what is communicated is
dictated by demands of collectives,
therefore, the public (us) also controls Pop
culture to a degree.
Is
Canadian Pop Culture different then
American Pop Culture?
Explain?
Globalization enables pop culture to be spread
and be sold around the world:
Universalization: the spread of pop culture
trends from on area to the rest of the world.
Ex: McDonalds is found in 110 countries.
Hybridization: combining elements of two or
more different cultures to create a new
product.
Ex: Character on Sesame Street who has aids
(pg. 83, Africa)
