Paralinguistic features
• Pay attention to:
– Tactile communication: firm handshake, nod on back
– Vocal communication: changes in loudness, pitch, rhythm
– Proxemics: how you use physical space to communicate (territory
things like a clean desk, personal space zones)
• Active Listening also plays an essential part for effective
communication:
– it involves eye contact, head nods & facial expressions, avoidance of
distracting actions, asking questions, paraphrasing, avoiding
interruption
• Tip:
– It is essential that people are aware of the cltures and communication
conventions of those whom they propose to meet in order to avoid
communication problems.
