This lecture drew on Mohan et al., pp.9-20.
It examined how our‘mental set’ makes us selective in what we
understand and in how we communicate.
It explored what Mohan meant by selective perception. It also
examined the examples used to explain the impact of selective
perception on our communication .
It asked the question ‘Why is selective perception significant in
the communication process?’

This video examines how different ways of speaking can
lead to racial stereotyping.
In particular, it examines the misunderstandings arising in
cross cultural/intercultural communication.

Question 4 Non-verbal language and the interview
Mohan et al., argue that credibility is an important attribute
in professional life.
Credibility has three components:
Competence
Trustworthiness and
Dynamism
These are conveyed in verbal and non-verbal communication
Eye contact regulates the flow of conversation.
Paralanguage - aspects of the voice such as loudness, tone,
pitch are as important as the language itself.
