isolationists (NO need for foreign goods or
influence)
• ETHNOCENTRISM – feeling of superiority
• Relations w/ the West: little to no contact

China which would
allow a foreign
country to trade with
them – many
refused to “bow
down”
• Confucianism:
encouraged selfsufficiency which
promoted
isolationism
