What are the ‘Middle
Ages’?

Our perceptions: lords, ladies, knights
and jousting!!
Historical Definition…
The years between ‘ancient times’
(which ended with the fall of Western
Rome around 500 AD) and ‘modern
times’ (which began with Columbus’
trip to America around 1500 AD.
 Medieval means “middle ages’


Those Poor Romans…
Part of the reason
Rome ‘fell’ was
due to invasions
from the barbarians
in the North.
 These invaders
destroyed towns,
kept their own
language and laws.
Few could read or
write.


Took over a land called
‘Gaul’, which is today
France (Franks -->
France)
 In 768, a leader named
Charlemagne became
king
 Charlemagne conquered
weaker kingdoms and
united most of Western
Europe under the
Franks


the Franks, they began to
attack from the North
 Europeans were scared
and vulnerable; they needed
a way to defend
themselves and organize
their communities!


They developed a new
system of government:
feudalism!

Land was owned by kings or lords but
held by vassals in return for their
loyalty.
 Barons/princes/nobles gave a share of
their land to a vassal, who promised to
fight for his lord. A vassal could also
be a lord.

