AP Chapter 11
Once the Jeffersonians victory in 1800 they
learned it was easier to condemn that to govern
 President Adam’s biggest problem in the election
of 1800 was his failure to take the U.S. to war
against France
 Federalist accused Jefferson on the following,
robbing a widow, fathering children with a slave,
being an atheist, Robbing children of their trust
fund
 Jefferson did not respond to these attacks


Jefferson won New York in the 1800
election because Aaron Burr used his
influence to turn the state to Jefferson
 Jeffersonian Democratic-Republicans saw
themselves as, strict constructionists,
protectors of agrarian purity, believers of
political and economic liberty and strong
supporters of states’ rights


South and West
 The 1800 election had to be decided by the
House of Representatives
 When Jefferson took office as the first change in
political party it was peaceful and orderly

 As an example the Federalist economic
programs were left almost intact
 Jefferson and his followers oppose Adam’s
last minute appointment of new federal
judges mainly because it was an attempt
by a defeated part to gain power


concerning a powerful federal government
 John Marshall’s service at Valley Forge
convinced him that we needed a strong
central authority
 Chief Justice Marshall ensured that the
poltiical and economic systems were
based on a strong central government


Judicial Review was established when the
Supreme Court declared the Judiciary Act
of 1789 unconstitutional
 The case of Marbury v. Madison decided
who had the right to declare an act of
Congress unconstitutional


Election of 1800
 Between Adams and Jefferson
 Republicans accused Adams of wanting a
monarchy.
 Accused Adams of being a gambler.
 Federalists said Jefferson was dangerous,
supported the revolution in France.


 Jefferson beat Adams by 8 electoral votes.
 Aaron Burr tied with Jefferson.

House of Representatives had to choose
the winner.
 Result of the 12th Amendment, which
allows us to vote for both president and
vice president together.
 A vote for one is a vote for both.

Jeffersonian Era
Eliminated internal taxes, reduced
influence of national bank. Reduced size
of government and army.
 Jefferson replaced them with Republicans.
 Jefferson got congress to pass an
embargo against the British. Madison
lifted the embargo, and eventually
declared war against Britain.


Principle of Judicial Review.
 Doubled the size of the United States.
 Information, cross country possible, open
settlement of the West. Strengthened
American claim to Oregon territory.

Louisiana Purchase
1803, cost 15 million dollars.
 This purchase doubled the size of the
United States.
 Conflict with Jefferson since he made this
decision without Congressional approval.

Jefferson Facts
Even though wrote all men are created
equal, he owned 200 slaves.
 When visitors would come to Monticello he
would make sure they saw no slaves.
 Jefferson architect, responsible for
designing University of Virginia.

