NO Single nation could monopolize
China
An Era of Imperialism
Europeans were exploiting and
colonizing Africa. The USA did not
However….the United States began
to look to the Pacific/Asia and Latin
America
EVERYONE wanted to control China
Japan wanted to industrialize too and
decided to colonize China too
Why Americans thought Imperialism
was Ok
Desire from military strength
Thirst for new markets
Belief in cultural superiority (“The
White Man’s Burden)
1893-The USA annexes Hawaiian
Islands

Foreign Devils Everywhere
British, Japanese, Russian, German,
French, and Americans carving China up
Secret Chinese societies created to rid
China of “Foreign Devils”
The “Boxers” were skillful at killing
hundreds of missionaries and foreigners
The Boxer Rebellion was put down by
American soldiers
The Open Door Policy
1. US economy depended on exports
2. The US can intervene anytime to
keep foreign markets open
3. The closing off of an area to
American business, citizens, and
ideas threatened American survival

Spain controlled Cuba, they were MEAN to the
Cuban to the natives
The rich land owners were of Spanish ancestry.
Majority of Cubanos were Native American or
Native/African mix
They rebelled against Spanish control (1890’s)
THE USA ALWAYS liked Cuba
