IMPERIALISM
•
A policy of extending a country's power and influence
through diplomacy or military force.
•
Many countries became involved in Imperialism to become a
powerful country.
IMPERIALISM
•
Cuba tried to break free from being owned &
controlled by Spain for over 20 years. Each
time the Cubans tried to fight Spain they were
defeated and Spain kept control of Cuba.
•
American businesses in Cuba grew & as more
Americans worked in Cuba, they got caught
up in the fight between Cubans and Spanish as
Cuba continued to fight to become free of
Spanish rule.
IMPERIALISM
•
A major factor in the shift in American
foreign policy toward imperialism in the late
19th century was the need for overseas
markets for increased industrial and
agricultural production.
•
By the 1890’s, the United States was bursting
with a new sense of power generated by an
increase in population, wealth, & industrial
production.
