Data Assimilation
Summary
Data being assimilated
• ice charts: Canada
• SSMI (ice concentrations) + AVHRR (SST):
Norway (SAF project)
• ice drift + SSMI concentrations: USA
Data assimilation
• 4 nations performing
– Canada, Norway, United States, Russia
• types of initialization
– insertion
– nudging
• types of analysis
– Bayesian
– simple averaging
– statistical interpolation
Models
• Model scales
– local, regional models: Canada, Denmark,
Norway, Russia
– global models: United States
• Benefits
– provides information not otherwise available
White paper status
• Good start but would like to finalize
• requires

better definition of next steps
input from Baltic Sea Ice Services
Issues raised
• Commonalities
– better error characterization of data and models
– improved representation of oceanography
– high resolution models driven with SAR data, but
not at the expense of low resolution models
– emphasis on short term forecasts (0-3 days)
– analysts will need to QC data initially
Next steps
• Don’t need to solve the whole problem all at
once - focus on specific achievable goals for
next 5 years
• develop a structure to collaboration
• next workshop should focus on a specific
issue related to data assimilation
• continue with individual approaches and
report back in some detail at next meeting
