economic, political
and social
implications of ….

Climate change over the next 20 years
could result in a global catastrophe
costing millions of lives in wars and
natural disasters..
What is the evidence?
Europeans see it
in the elderly….
At least 35,000
people died as a
result of the
record heatwave
in 2003
Canada's Inuit see
it in disappearing
Arctic ice.
The shantytown dwellers of
Latin America and Southern
Asia see it in lethal storms and
floods.
Europeans,
North
Americans
see it in
disappearing
glaciers,
forest fires
and fatal
heat waves
Some warming is
certain, but the
degree will be
determined by
feedbacks
involving
•melting ice,
• water vapour,
•clouds and
•changes to
vegetation..
Diseases are
spreading
Some crops grow faster
while others see yields
slashed by disease and drought.
Strong hurricanes are becoming
more frequent and destructive.
Europe enters a
mini ice age ?
Confused?
•We know climate
change is
happening
•We know what is
causing it to
happen
•We know what
the
consequences
will be
…. But what I want to know is……
•HOW WILL IT
•EFFECT ME?
•CAN’T WE STOP
• IT SOMEHOW?
… or will we, like
the Ark on this
cartoon,
be about to sink
…. In the UK we will have….

economic upheaval we
have ever known.
Those areas of
the world which
are already
on the margins
will simply not
survive.

Many of the
world’s major
cities are coastal
We could face
a world of
human misery
on a scale as
yet unknown
As Africa becomes
uninhabitable …..
There will be mass
migrations around
the world
WHERE CAN THEY GO?
…. So what can we do?
Time is beginning to
run out
Well I think
the government
should do
something
Changing technology:
•Energy
•Housing
•Transport
…. But we must ALL take
responsibility…..
Reverse globalisation
Buy local
FAIR TRADE
