Terms & People to Know
Alsace-Lorraine- territory France lost
to Germany in 1871 (Franco-Prussian
War)
Francis (Franz) Ferdinand- heir to the
throne of the Austro-Hungarian empire.
Kaiser William III- German emperor
during WWI.
Western Front- battle front in France.
Terms and People to Know
Casualties- soldiers killed, wounded, or
missing.
Contraband- goods usually defined as
weapons and other articles that may be used
to fight a war.
National Defense Act (1916)- expanded the
size of the army.
Naval Construction Act (1916)- ordered the
building of more naval ships.

Zimmerman Note- German telegram
proposing an Alliance with Mexico; grant
land of N. Mexico, Arizona, Texas back to
Mexico.
Selective Service Act (1917)- Authorized the
draft of young men for military service.
War Industries Board (WIB)- headed by
Bernard Baruch. It regulated all industries
engaged in the war effort.
Terms and People to Know
Committee on Public Information (CPI)designed to educate the public about the
causes and nature of the war.
Conscientious Objectors- Those who resisted
the draft because their moral or religious
beliefs forbid them to fight in wars.
Espionage Act (1917)- Allowed postal
authorities to ban treasonable or seditious
newspapers, magazines, or printed materials
from the mail.

Great Migration- large numbers of African
Americans leaving the south for the north.
Convoy- groups of merchant ships protected
by warships.
Vladimir Lenin- Communist leader who led
the Russian Revolution against Czar Nicholas
II.
Treaty of Brest-Litovsk- Ended war between
Russia and Germany.

General John J. Pershing- Commander of
American forces in Europe.
“Doughboys”- American troops fighting in
WWI (mostly in France).
Fourteen Points- Outlined America’s war
aims (peace without victory)
Self-Determination- the right for people to
choose their own form of government.

League of Nations- was designed to be a
peace keeper in international affairs (similar
to the UN).
Henry Cabot Lodge- Republican Senator from
MA. Hated by Wilson; left out of the
Versailles peace conference.
Reparations- payment for war damages.

Irreconcilables- Isolationist senators who
opposed any treaty that involved the League
of Nations.
Reservationists- Senators who opposed the
Treaty of Versailles as written. Wanted
changes.
Red Scare- A wave of widespread fear of
suspected communists and radicals thought
to be planning revolution in the U.S.

Palmer Raids (1920)- police arresting
thousands of people who were radicals or
simply immigrants from southern or Eastern
Europe. (response to the Red Scare)
Sacco & Vanzetti- Italian anarchists who
were accused of murder and were executed.
(little evidence… based on ethnicity?)

(showed final rejection of the League
